Thanks to the past maps that we have achieved, we can compare the past with the present and predict the future.

In the past, a lot of the things that nowadays are built and urbanized were croplands. This shows that the society of about a hundred years ago was very rural. Of the two places that we have chosen, one was a town full of farmhouses (Gurb) and the other one was a tiny town surrounded by fields and farms. In this town all the factories were located in a strategic place, like by the rivers or next to the roads. At the moment, the factories are located away from the urban nucleus, in industrial estates.

The current society has evolved up to a point where we very little rural, and we are becoming less and less rural. This evolution has strengthened recently with the real estate bubble. Thanks to that, we can predict that, if there isn’t a big change, everything will be urbanized, and, if this situation continues, in one hundred years, the city of Vic will have grown by 150%.

Another effect that will modify the society of the future is the climate change. This will cause many train tracks to be replaced by more eco-friendly trains. The climate change will also cause the new buildings to be designed to take full advantage of renewable energies. In spite of the pollution, the factories won’t stop growing. A lot of them will change to renewable energies, but the others will continue using oil. However, thanks to the technology revolution, nobody will work in the factories. Instead, everybody will work at home using the Internet. In the future, the location of the factories won’t change very much. The present industrial zone, “Mas Gali”, will grow considerably in size, and the industrial zone “Les Casasses” won’t change. The industrial zone “el Burger”, which is relatively new, will grow too, and near that there will be a new industrial zone named “poligon de la Moda”, oriented to all the factories of the textile industry, like Inditex or Mango.

vic 1881:

These photos are a comparison between Vic in 1881 and Vic nowadays. To compare them, we’ve put an old map on top of a current map taken from Google Earth.

On these images we can see the old town. In the first image, we can observe the center of Vic, but there aren’t the outskirts because they didn’t exist. However, we can see the shape of the old zone of the residential area.

Gurb 1914:

On these photos of Vic we can see how the town was in 1900. The biggest difference is that, in the past, there were no houses, only fields. It’s important to say that a lot of the current roads had already been built because of the separation between the fields.

On these images of Vic we can see an image of how the town was in 1900 and another of how it is nowadays. We can see that the city centre was already there, without big changes comparing it to the present. However, there were a lot of fields around the centre, while now most of the fields are built. With this, the city has grown a lot.

On these images of Vic we can see an image of how an area in Gurb was in 1900 and another of how it is nowadays.

In the image of the past we can see that there were no houses and a lot of fields, while now there are some houses and less fields. We can also see that some roads were already there, but streets weren’t.

In the actual image we can see that there is football camp and there are still the same roads as before, but there also are some streets.

Here we have 3 pictures of Gurb.

We can see that on the first one there are fields everywhere. On the second one some houses start to appear, and on the current picture there are very few fields and a sports centre has been built. The evolution is from fields, to fields and roads, and finally to a lot of houses with some fields.

These are 3 photos of the industrial zone.

On the last photo we can clearly see that the landscape has been transformed into an industrial zone, but on the other two there are only fields in the zone, without any signal of a future industrial estate.

In these photos we can see the evolution of Vic. Vic has always been a town, but we can see that the amount of residential areas has grown.

Here we can see the industrial estate. Like on the other photos, in the past there were fields everywhere, but now everything is urbanized.

Here we can see the road C-17, a very important road in the area which connects Vic and Barcelona. Some years ago it was not there yet, which means that in the past it was very difficult to get to Barcelona.

These are the photos were we can best see that Gurb were just fields in the past, and there were no residential areas, but these have appeared throughout the years and there are many now.

Mapa Futur

This map is a prediction of how the town of Gurb could be in the future. We can also see the train tracks and the C-17 and some other roads that could also change.

Mapa present

This is the current map of Gurb. Comparing it to the past map, we can see that almost nothing has changed, except the C-25.

Mapa passat

This is a map from 1914. As we can see, it is the map with less roads, because, in the past, there were less cars and the people used the train more.
